this is great.....I am an engineer and producer and recently I've been thinking, with the music business withering and shifting I'm growing increasingly bored mixing other peoples music to freelance and I'm thinking the world of Field recording, Sound Mixing and Foley/Sound-Design is more to my liking....I'd love to hear any stories about how you got into the business. Especially about where you first started working.....I've got music and recording experience in video games, worked at a major label, release music with a few projects and remix major and indie label bands in my spare time....I know I have the ability to deliver great, clear sound - just curious how you think I should approach it....

THANK YOU!! I, too, have worked on many indie films where I had to work hard to convince the "above-the-line" people that sound is at least as important as video. Everything said above is very true and I've experienced most of it.

A recent quote I read, but can't remember the source, "The best way to make a great movie look like an amateur movie is with bad sound".

Ahh, all so true! As a sound recorder/engineer working in Australia I am constantly dealing with producers and directors that have spent the greatest portion of there budget on the D.O.P and camera and are left looking for someone to do sound at the last minute for the 'experience', credit and/or a copy of the finished production for the 'show reel'.
Having spent $20,000 recently on upgrading all of my gear I am getting tired of being told that my equipment rate alone is too expensive. As I have tried to keep my rates competitive, this is all starting to get tiresome. I still have the cost of insurance for my equipment, paying for expendables and any maintenance required during the year. Plus it would be nice to get paid for MY time too and not just barely cover the costs of my gear.
Recent example of the disparity in pay scale, $14000 (2/3rds of total budget) paid to an individual to film and edit a small independent film, with his gear. All sound recorded with camera mounted boom. (bare bones set ups, very minimal lighting, all to HD cam, no dolly shots) Told by said individual who supplied camera and collected a cool 14k, that they could not afford a sound recorder to be on set.
Director is now asking me to fix the mess and mix the film with a sound post budget of $1000! AHHH HA HAHA. What do you think I said?
I pride myself on being very professional and I offer A grade gear, well maintained and the knowledge/experience to use it to it's fullest but time and time again I am faced with productions that are offering peanuts and expecting more than monkeys!

Excellent info that is long overdue and IMHO should be a mandatory screen preceding C-list posts that contain 'keywords' like sound, audio, boom, mixer and pole. My only exception is the range on quality mixers; I think the range should start at $600 since a number of high-quality, but limited, mixers have hit the market in the last 10 years, notably the PSC ProMix series which I use.
